Review: Check & Mate

Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"Check and Mate" offers a captivating journey of self-discovery intertwined with the intricate strategies of chess. Despite being labeled as YA, the maturity and responsibilities of the main characters lend it a more college-aged New Adult (NA) feel.

Mallory, the female protagonist, emerges as a highly relatable figure, grappling with burnout and the weight of the world on her shoulders, evoking empathy from readers.

Throughout the narrative, characters undergo significant personal and professional growth, confronting personal traumas with a focus on healthy coping mechanisms—an aspect often overlooked in adult life.

The book skillfully portrays chess as a sport, eliciting genuine investment in the characters and shedding light on the less glamorous aspects of competitive sports. Moreover, the ensemble cast, brimming with endearing characters, captures readers' hearts, with the sibling banter adding an extra layer of charm.

In essence, "Check and Mate" delivers a poignant tale that not only celebrates the intricacies of chess but also resonates with themes of resilience, personal growth, and the bonds of friendship and family.

The sibling banter alone makes it worth a read!
